Let’s Chat!

My mom and I talk on the phone every. single. day. (the only day we miss is the once-a-week day they are in TO looking after Baby C). And when we miss our phone chat, we email. Some days – ok, a lot of days – we do both. Dad always shakes his head, “how can you visit by phone, hang up, and immediately think of something more to say?” Mom and I just look at each other, laugh, shrug…and start another conversation.

in person meet-ups are even better than telephone gabfests!

So, in random Mama-chat style, here’s what’s on my mind this Monday morning…

~ The price of gas:

yes, that would be the price PER LITRE for fuel!

Are you for real??? I remember thinking that $1.00 or more per litre was exhorbitant. This is simply ridiculous. I’m so glad that I rarely drive…I make my weekly round-trip to Toronto to visit The Brother, SIL Ana, Little E and Baby C, and that’s really about it. Thanks to living in Uptown Waterloo, I do groceries and errands on foot, and I walk (across the road!) to work. I really feel badly for people who commute long distances…how much is it costing just to drive to work?

~ On Saturday eve when Michelle and I went to see The Lincoln Lawyer, we were inundated with previews for upcoming summer movie releases. Ick and ugh. Sci-fi, mindless action adventures, and sequels to movies that did not interest me the first time around are all on the horizon. Oh well. I guess that means more mindless TV viewing is in my future!

~ One of my neighbours left this magazine in our recycling room – slash – lending library area:

april 2011 issue of oprah magazine - score!

I haven’t cracked it open yet since I just picked it up this morning, but I’ll be interested to see what Oprah suggests in “Optimism 101″ and how we’re going to achieve “Eating Fabulously on $40 A Week.” I’ll do a recap once I am informed!

~ Guess what my new favourite coffee is…

starbucks instant coffees are wayyy better than the instore brews!

I recently bought the new Via Tribute instant coffee sachets and they are my favourite of the Starbucks blends that I’ve tried to date! I might very well be forsaking all other Via options in favour of Tribute!

~ A’s sweater has gone from this…

…to this:

…while the silk skeins have gone from this…

…to this:

The silk balls are being shelved, though, til the Celtic Sweater is (once again) complete.

~ For over a year, B has been involved in helping to co-ordinate a training exercise involving local emergency services plus the college. This mock scenario drill was the top local news story last evening!

Here‘s the article in this morning’s K-W Record. And click here for the clip on CKCO News! According to all reports (and B’s personal observations), everything went off without a hitch!

And that’s what’s happening on this snowy – yes, white stuff fell last eve and overnight – Monday!

You just know that as soon as I hit “publish” I’m going to think of something else to I could say!…

And now I’m off to call Mom!

Have a good one!

Is there anyone you talk to on a daily basis? I am not really a huge fan of the phone. I communicate via email with many people daily, but Mom is my only regular telephone partner.

Phone, email, texting, Skype…what’s your favourite mode of keeping in touch?

I love to see that you’re still in touch with your mom every day! :) (I wish my mum was on email!)

I see and talk to mum every other day during the week when we usually have to talk in bullet points since Jacob is cruising to head home. We often talk a couple of times on the phone but try to fit in a ‘proper’ visit semi-regularly to get a good chat in. We’re currently VERY behind in that regard and I’m feeling it! Otherwise I’d say that I’m NOT a phone person – I prefer email. Wanda is my one exception. About once every 6 weeks or so we get on the phone/skype and talk for HOURS. :) Dave has just recently given Jacob a cell phone and we occasionally text when he’s staying over at Dave’s. I must admit that I LOVE those “I love you!” texts!

Gas – UGH. I commute about 30 minutes each way and at the current prices am spending about $280/month. You’re definitely doing well by living in the same immediate area that you work/shop!

Yay that the silk yarn is finally wound! :)

totally get how a conversation with mom when you’re pressed for time is soooo not the same as when you have all the time in the world! ah, that’s sweet that j is in touch by texting – that will keep you on your toes! i bet HE can help YOU with phone/internet tech stuff! i joke that little e and baby c are totally going to be aunti’s go-to gals for help in the wired world, in the future! (gulp) on your gas bill…that’s a realy cut into the take-home pay…but what can you do (run in to work like your dad used to?! haha!)

I’m not really in touch with anyone once a day…once or twice a week for my parents. I’ve definitely prefer e-mail to phone/texting (although I gather younger people don’t really e-mail…they’re more texting).
Congratulations on all your unraveling and untangling!

thanks, zo! let the knitting begin!! i’m going to finish a’s sweater this month, then i’m going to plow through my yarn stash over the next few months. expect knitting goals every month, in the future! yes: i read somewhere that email is “passe,” actually, with the “younger generations.” it’s all texting. can’t imagine what it would be like to be a tween or teen in 2011!!

I’m in contact with my mom and sisters almost every single day! And I have some girlfriends who I talk to at least every couple of days and email/text in between. I love emailing and texting, but certain friends are better for phone calls. Good work getting the silk yarn ready to go – it’s so pretty!

    • 1970kikiproject  On April 4, 2011 at 6:42 pm

what a lovely group of female family friendships you can enjoy, dorry! my BFF debbie and i email every weekday, and it’s a really enjoyable “daily habit!”. i agree – some friends are more email-friends while others are phone-friends…and then there’s bloggie friends! :)

It’s great you talk to your mom everyday (I honestly don’t think I could handle that, don’t tell!) I do text/email/call my best friend in some form everyday- she goes to college a few hours away.

    • 1970kikiproject  On April 4, 2011 at 4:35 pm

haha! oh, i do realize that not everyone would want to chat with their mom daily! no worries – i wont’ tell! :) glad to hear you can enjoy a daily visit with your BF…Bfs are so understanding!

I talk to my mom everyday (usually multiple times) too! I also teach where she works now, so I use her office as my coat closet and chat with her before and after my class for a few minutes (mon, wed, fri). I don’t have anyone else I talk to everyday (besides Joe).
I’m not sure even what we talk about all the time, but when I call her office and she’s not there, it bugs me!!!

I do skype with matthew sometimes, but he needs his dad to set him up with it so it doesn’t happen often. I also skype with my dad sometimes, but he usually has the camera pointed weirdly and I just see half his face or his forehead.

Good luck with your next yarn endeavor!

Oh, and how interesting about the drill. So you know your town is prepared if anything were to happen–and you live with the expert on it, so you’re all set :)

Funny, price of gas here is like $3.75. Not sure what the exchange rate is right now, but I definitely shake my head when I pump my gas around here…it’s crazy! I used to fill my tank for $13 in my first car, and now it’s over $40. I need to move somewhere where I can walk places more (might need a better climate too!).

    • 1970kikiproject  On April 4, 2011 at 2:24 pm

interesting re your gas prices – i wasn’t sure what the price was in the US right now…in the past, canadians always filled up car tanks with fuel in the US before coming back over the border because your prices were so much better! i’m thinking those days may be past! oh, that is so neat that you and your mom are in the same building! little snatches of visiting time – that’s wonderful! sounds like you always have lots to say, too!

  • Johanna B  On April 4, 2011 at 11:38 am

It’s funny now that I think about it. I talk to my co-worker every week day ftf and I talk to my cousin Amy every week day ftf but no one on the phone everyday. There’s not even anyone I email on a daily basis. On the weekends I really don’t communicate with anyone in anyway on a regular basis. My life isn’t devoid of contact with other human beings but it kind of sounds like it from this response. I need to get out more.

    • 1970kikiproject  On April 4, 2011 at 11:44 am

Johanna, I always enjoy reading your comments…”I need to get out more” – at least you are out and about during the weekdays!

  • Holly @ The Runny Egg  On April 4, 2011 at 10:12 am

I honestly prefer email or phone calls — texting takes too long :( and I really only skype with a few people. It is fun though (when it works!!)

Obviously I talk to Jason on a daily basis, but other than that I talk to my sisters quite often but definitely not every day. Same with my parents — I’d say I talk to them at least 3-4x per week.

    • 1970kikiproject  On April 4, 2011 at 10:16 am

i agree that texting takes way too long – i try to avoid typing a lot on my blackberry because my thumbs start to seize up! that’s really wonderful that you remain in close and regular contact with your family. i really miss my mom when we are not in touch!
