…And Work a Double Shift. Yesterday’s work experiences cover both bases!
Mondays are typically a light day at the store because I only have three hours of work, and I’m with my manager, Paul, for the entire time. Yesterday? Not such a walk in the park!
From 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., I was at my store.
At 2 p.m., the heat was on! I had 30 minutes to hop home to the Condo Casa, grab food and drink, scramble down to my car, and boot it down to Kitchener. The Kitchener store is on a main thoroughfare that is *congested* on a good day. I crossed my fingers and put the pedal to the metal (that’s a joke, Dad!).

The two stores really are similar, aren’t they. The major difference is the flooring: my store is light, the Kitchener store is dark wood. My store is a bit bigger in floor space, but the Kitchener location has a larger backroom, more storage, two washrooms.
So, at the end of the day, what’s my verdict?
~ I had a lot of fun today!!! Working at the new location did not seem like work because everything was new.
~ I was busier in Kitchener than I anticipated – I sold three pairs of spikes, alone! The half marathon clinic met at 6:30 p.m., so that was added social time.
~ The manager in Kitchener, Nicole, is super organized, and has the store in wonderful shape. I’ll work there any time she needs a hand.
I’m really glad I had the chance to check out a different store! If the opportunity arises again, I’m in!
What’s the longest day you’ve ever worked? When I taught, there were some long days of teaching+marking/prep at home…but yesterday is one of the longest retail days I’ve done!
*#*#*#*#*
Can you believe the results of the Boston Marathon?!! Yes – I had to cheat and find out who won, before I’ve had a chance to watch my PVR recording. The fastest marathon ever for the men! American women in 2nd and 5th spots – I will be enthralled when I finally do see the ‘thon!

congrats on checking another new experience off your list! It’s fun to see the way other stores are merchandised. I’ve been to a couple of the lululemon stores and there are subtle differences, but a lot of similarity, too.
yes! it’s very interesting how the “building blocks” can be the same (product, displays, overall decor) yet a manager’s style, organization, attention to detail can influence the big picture. happily, both these stores are kept very clean and neat!
Long days of work? My first year of teaching was the worst! Extra long hours of work at that school and then all the prep and marking on top of it. I was so glad for year 2 at a different school!
Now my long days of work are at home… sometimes from 5a.m. until 11 p.m. There are days when I really want/need a vacation from my life!
Boston Marathon – whoo hoo! I always think of you when this day comes around! Jeff followed the results closely and couldn’t believe the times. Proud of Ryan Hall for coming in 4th!
the americans really did so well yesterday! i still haven’t watched but can’t wait to see that women’s finish! glad to hear jeff was avidly watching – maybe he’ll run it some day! (?) oh yea, as a mom YOU know long days, eh! and the first year teaching – that is sooo much work. can you imagine being a mom AND a first year teacher?! yikes!
Hmm…I don’t really remember working an extra long day..maybe 10 hours straight once. I remember studying/writing papers from the time I got up till bedtime in college though…
whew! glad you’ve been spared the boss who requests a mega-long overtime shift! college demands and deadlines can be the worst! my worst university day was the one where I had an essay due, three exams and a Co-Op interview (it was Valentine’s day, to boot!) – will never forget it!
My sister Jane ran Boston on Monday in 3 hours 39 minutes! Very proud of her!
Woo hoo for jane!! Thanks for letting me know, julie! That is awesome news. I’d love to hear her race report!! Did you track her online during the race? I bet you were on pins and needles with excitement for her!
The longest I have ever worked is two back-to-back 12 hour shifts followed by a day of grad school classes without a break. I did have an hour between getting off work at 8AM on a Monday morning and having to be in class 30 minutes away by 9AM. I didn’t shower. I didn’t change clothes. I did manage to get something to eat at a drive through (back in the day when I ate such things) and I drove very fast. It was a long 36 hours. I was younger then.
Now THAT would be a unique experience for sure, and one you would not want to repeat! Ah what we don’t do when we’re young and energetic! (Foolish?!)
When I was in college I worked two jobs — I’d usually work at Pier 1 from 6am-noon (then go to class for a few hours) then work at my other retail job from 4-9pm. Days like that were actually kind of nice — I was earning money but I still had time to read/do homework/etc, etc.
Pier 1 would be fun to work at, I think and you did like it, I believe!
That schedule would break up your day nicely! Work, school, work, school…nothing for too long a stretch of time!
