Friday Photos: Market Deal-ee-o’s!!

Yesterday was an absolutely spectacular day to make a visit to the market! The last time I went it was but the early days of 2011…

our local farmer's market!

Since I didn’t have to be at the store until late afternoon, it was the perfect day to accompany Dad on his weekly trip.

Busy place! Dad usually goes first thing in the morning, but yesterday we arrived late morning – it was much more crowded earlier in the day (but still not as bad as mid-summer when the tourists will visit). Things work out as they’re meant to be, though – within five minutes of our arrival, we bumped into Cathie‘s parents at the chicken vendor! What a lovely reunion!

I had three goals for this outing:

1) stock up on produce

2) see how much $ I could save vs shopping at Valumart (hello, Holly, and the Great Grocery Challenge for May!)

3) spend time with Dad! 🙂

Coles Notes version of our trip: all three goals accomplished, successfully!

Last year, I did a series of posts called Friday Photos. In honour of Friday Photos – and to document the great savings! – let’s let the market photos do the talking…

i bought this SAC of spinach for $4.99 - it contains easily double the amount i get at valumart for the same price

i love prepared fresh salad bags - a SMALLER bag at valumart is $1.49

a new type of apple to me; a taste test proved it delicious: crisp, slightly tart...$10 for 17 of these beauties!

an avacado score!! now that's a good price, eh dorry?! i got three and would have bought more, but they were pretty ripe...

Final total of my market haul: $29 (I spent $22 – Dad so kindly and generously treated me to broccoli (three bunches for $5) and the avacados – thanks again, Dad!).

the total picture - yup, i am STOCKED with greens + apples! good thing everything will keep well in the fridge!

And just to end off, some photos simply for fun and colour!

Have you been to a farmer’s market yet in 2011? The season for locally grown items is just around the corner for us; local asparagus and strawberries will be among the first “100 mile diet”-style goodies available!

Kick-off to Mother’s Day weekend!…

Something to read: “Why the 1970s were the best time to be a mom” from today’s Globe and Mail.

Happy Weekend, all!
