transported back in time

sunday night, sharon and i went out to the movies!

based on the hit broadway musical!

when i read a promotional piece in the newspaper a couple of weeks ago about rock of ages, i immediately was super-keen to check it out. an 80s-themed musical + mr tom cruise?? you won’t have to twist my arm too hard to get me into the theatre! plus, i had a cineplex gift card to use – all the better!

sharon and i wanted to get together some time in june, and i thought she’d be the perfect rock of ages viewing-partner since she’d be way familiar with the era, too. and we were certain beyond a doubt pretty sure this film would not be of general interest to my uncle paul!

no evening out is complete without a self-portrait!

gosh, was this ever a fun movie. rock of ages is campy, cheesy and had us grinning from ear-to-ear and laughing out loud. if you want a super-fun evening out to celebrate the beginning of summer, go see this film. it does not take itself seriously, and if you go in with the attitude that you’ll be lovin’ every minute of it (haha, i had to work in that reference somehow – that song is not in the film but very well could be!) you’ll really enjoy yourself. typical of a musical, the plotline is not complex (hairspray was much the same) and the two *kids* who play the main characters are wholesome, naive and super cute. i wanted to be dancing and singing, too!

highlights to note (without spoiling anything for you):

  • the 80s fashions, hair and make-up – yup, been there, done that
  • great acting: alec baldwin, russell brand and tom cruise are fabulous! – my tommy does an awesome job as stacee jaxx – my guy can sing, seriously! special mention goes to paul giamatti and catherine zeta-jones
  • THE MUSIC!! man, i had forgotten what good tunes we rocked out to back in 1987. for example, i loved the mash-up of juke box hero with joan jett’s i love rock n roll, and i was reminded of how pour some sugar on me is such a solid anthem!
  • hey man [you'll get it when you see the movie!]

anyway, the movie brought back happy memories of my teen-age era. i have a feeling i may finally swap some songs on my ipod – it could be time to crank up the guns n roses for a while!

rating: *** stars – make that three solid gold stars!

30 day photography challenge

day #26: close-up

a week ago tonight, our local saucony rep visited the store so that members of our half and full marathon clinics could test-drive a pair of saucony shoes, if they so wished, on their evening run. [sidenote for shoe geeks: the most popular model requested was the kinvara!].

the bags of shoes that melissa toted in caught my eye, so i surreptitiously (i hope!) snuck into our back room and grabbed my camera (a permanent fixture in my knapsack) so i could snap a picture:

all saucony, of course!

i liked the jumble of colours and mishmash of angles. please note that i did not stage this photo at all! there was no rearranging of shoes into a certain direction or swapping colours – this is exactly how the shoes were heaped in the huge equipment sack. (remember, i was trying to be quick with my photo!). this was a fun photo to take for our official collection because it came together so fast and unexpectedly. i love when you get satisfying results without even trying!

i ask this q so often, it could become a weekly fixture on the blog…oh well. it’s just very fun to talk movies!

what is the last film you saw, give it a rating out of **** (four stars), and do you recommend it? i still want to see what to expect when you’re expecting because i think it’ll be light n fluffy – perfect for summer viewing!

On Sunday I watched Love in the Ruins. I loved the scenery (Greece) but the acting was kind of blah. Cute story, nothing original. Even so, glad I watched it. Sometimes I watch movies just for the scenery – esp if it’s Paris or Greece.

i agree with choosing a movie for the scenery…next best thing to being able to travel to the location! just googled love in the ruins – that’s a new one to me. maybe i’ll pass since you don’t rave about it!

Love the photo! And, great review. We want to see it too (also it’s on our list of Broadway shows to see–I’m a bit unsure which I should do first!). Last movie I saw was Silence of the Lambs. It was on cable the other day so we watched it (again) and were reminded how awesome it is!

thanks, stacie! after seeing the movie, i would LOVE to see the broadway show – it was in toronto a couple years ago (i am not sure how long ago it was, actually) and it gave rave reviews from friends who saw it. hope you DO get to see both the musical and the movie! ooo, silence of the lambs…anthony hopkins is so scary! don’t you love the way he hisses “clarisse!”

Rock of Ages looks right up my alley with all its 80s cheesy goodness!
We saw “Moonrise Kingdom” last week. I thought it was really good…3.5 stars.
I like the jumbled sneakers close up…how they’re at all different angles and have different colors!

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 26, 2012 at 10:06 am

thanks, zo!all of the shoe companies have really gone with BRIGHT SHOES for spring/summer 2012 – saucony, too! moonrise kingdom – have not heard of it…will google that title. 3.5 stars? it’s a good one, eh! do see rock of ages – for our age group, it is a total hoot!

  • Gina Unger  On June 26, 2012 at 8:23 am

thanks for the tip-off of rock of ages – hadn’t heard of it and now i’ll write it down for one more to see! jeff and i have been on a bit of a tom cruise kick lately… the last 3 movies we’ve seen starred him (knight and day and two mission impossibles that we still hadn’t seen). knight and day comes in at the top for both of us b/c it’s funny and action-packed! we love tommy, too! ; )

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 26, 2012 at 9:22 am

gina, we always did have similar taste in guys (i know you know what i mean-haha!) !! yea, tommy!! knight and day – THAT was a very fun movie! forgot about that one! i have not yet seen the last mission impossible – need to fix that! DO see rock of ages – you guys will laugh!

  • Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count  On June 26, 2012 at 7:22 am

Rock of Ages sounds like so much fun, Cathy! Did people sing along? I probably would have. Ele and I went to see Mama Mia a few years ago and I couldn’t keep myself from singing along. I got myself the DVD for Christmas that year and I don’t think I’ve opened it yet…Need to do that! I honestly can’t rememember the last movie I saw…Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part deux?? Yes, I think that was it! What happened to the used sneakers after people were finished with them? Did they have to buy them or were they sold at a discount or given to charity? Full of questions…

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 26, 2012 at 9:21 am

i like questions – keeps our conversation going! the running shoes are used by the saucony rep as she goes store-to-store so that people can give them a try. they all looked new, so i am not sure how long they keep them in active rotation. and i do not know, to be honest, what happens to the shoes after that – my hope would be that they are recycled/donated! people did not sing along at “rock of ages” – but there was lots of laughing at the funny parts! i read a reviewer comparing rock of ages to “rocky horror picture show” in the sense that it COULD become a cult favorite – i would love to go again and sing along! mama mia – LOVED IT as i am a huge ABBA fan! glad you have the DVD even if you haven’t watched it – good to have for a feel-good movie watch!
