i’ve met my christmas match!

on the sixth day of december...

yes, i am feeling all christmas all the time. and that is good because christmas comes but once a year!

i bring my christmas game face to the store, too. this weekend, we saw an influx of shoppers – woo hoo! i can’t tell you how much fun it is to run around and help people find gifts. [i enjoy the thrill of shopping, then the customer gets the joy of paying – haha!]. if you feel like this guy:

…a retail job really is no place for you, at this time of year!

my manager, paul, and i have worked together at the store for almost six years, now. i’ve joked for a long time that if he ever leaves, i’m going, too, because we get along so well, and paul is awesome to work for. but, now that i also work at theOTHERstore, i have a second manager: nicole. and, i absolutely love working with her, as well. we have similar organizational styles, things that stress us out, and an adoration of paper products. plus….nicole is a christmas freak! [and i mean that as a compliment!].

you can imagine my glee when i walked into theOTHERstore and was greeted by these scenes:

fake snow on our display bunks...

a christmas tree!...

with a star topper!...

...and even lights!

pretend snow sprayed around the door and window bottoms AND snowflake window decals!

and in the back room…

rolls of gift wrap! there will be presents under the tree!

and that is not all!

~ nicole has the radio set at the station that plays nothing but christmas carols 24/7

~ she has organized a secret santa gift exchange for all of us staff!

now: before i arrived for my shift, i had already decided it was time to start looking xmas-y:

ta da! here's my sequined hairband, seeing the first light of day in 2011

our staff shirts are perfect for this time of year!

sooo….nicole has set the bar quite high…but, bwah hahaha!!! i still have ideas up my sleeve…

festive turtlenecks for under my work shirt...

a TINSEL-Y hairband...

earrings + necklace (these are borrowed from mom! i can't find my collection!)

christmas nails! this week's design: on the left...

...and the right!

[i bet nicole will do festive nails…to up the ante, i would need to get my nails done]

between you and me, i bet nicole has not yet laid all of her (christmas) cards on the table…i’m going to call it now: i predict she will set up a santa bowl with mini-candy canes for the customers! mark my words!

what would you buy someone in a $10 secret santa gift exchange? i totally scored with the name i received, thanks to the luck of the draw! i already have at least 8 1/2 ideas of what to buy this person! how to choose???!…

I love all of your festive holiday accessories! 🙂 So fun. The store has been SO busy starting 1.5 – 2 weeks ago, and while it’s exhausting, it’s also so much fun.

I laughed out loud at those turtlenecks. Hilarious. Ummm…maybe you could buy red fabric paint and paint some Santa hats on the porn stars? (oh, come on. I didn’t bring them up for WEEKS.)

gosh, stephanie, you know how to make me laugh!! yes, you have restrained yourself very well, of late, with the porn girls. hmmm…i could paint some ACTUAL CLOTHING on them, how about that?!! and santa hats, bien sur. the turtlenecks are at least 15 years old – *timeless.* as opposed to *dated.* 🙂

So festive! I love it when people get excited about christmas, and everyone just seems happier…

I’m pretty sure that unless I didn’t know/like the person, I’d have a hard time sticking to the $10 thing. Most likely, I’d buy a giftcard to their favorite coffee shop or something like that…then I would make something fun in the kitchen and share that—technically it wouldn’t “count” because it would be made from stuff I already had.

    Love all your christmas-y accessories!

thanks, lisa! i just can’t believe i have misplaced my own collection of earrings and necklaces. i used to have christmas socks, know i gave those away, but i want my earrings!!! i so agree with you – if you make something in your kitchen, it does not count $-wise. it’s *priceless!* hey! how many days left in your christmas-holiday countdown?! you must be around 10-ish, i am guessing??!

My last night class is on the 19th…but I really can’t complain because they are giving presentations tonight and Mon, and then our last classes are a “wrap-up” class (where I’m going to only talk about fun stuff and then let them go early!!!).

      • 1970kikiproject  On December 7, 2011 at 9:08 am

awesome! sounds like it’s downhill from here on…the presentations should be interesting, and the last class is a party class, for the most part! 🙂

If I knew they liked coffee I would buy them something coffee-related.

    • 1970kikiproject  On December 6, 2011 at 12:44 pm

…and we certainly have no shortage of options in our ‘hood where we could find said coffee-related options! thanks, tricia!

We don’t do Secret Santas anymore now that we only have 3 employees (and one is the boss) in our dept. I get my co-worker a subscription to her favorite cooking magazine. That way she gets to enjoy my present year round. I also tend to buy candles for other folks cuz I’m such a candle freak. I always have one burning at home.

    • 1970kikiproject  On December 6, 2011 at 9:30 am

yes, secret santas with three people would be hard to do as a secret! 🙂 i agree that magazine subscriptions are nice because they DO last all year. mmm, scented candles – lovely, esp at winter. very cosy!

Wow…and we still have more than 20 days to go in your outdoing each other with Christmas spirit. It sounds like a fun sort of competition thought!
We had a 10 dollar exchange at my job 10 years ago and everyone basically got everyone else gift cards to Barnes and Noble…and one year we asked if we could just donate the money instead of getting gifts (which the boss didn’t like since the secret santa was her thing….). I think I got someone a calendar once and someone else some chocolates. But, honestly, it was often an exercise in frustration!

haha, nicole does not know i am trying to keep up with her festive spirit…i’ll let you know what goes down in the next few weeks! i agree with gift cards being the safest – and most welcome? – secret santa idea, esp if you are not that close to the work colleague. every gift has a *message* so you want to be safe! i like the donation idea – too bad it got axed!
