she shoots, she scores!

guess what?! i have another new experience to tell you about! doh! did i ever mis-judge my timing…i could be up to #44 as of this blog post…but no way am i adding two years to my age! so, this is definitely an UNofficial new experience!

for eons, dad has been talking about going over to the waterloo rec centre to watch a university hockey game. in fact, he probably started proposing the idea shortly after we went to the kitchener panthers baseball game, this past july!

well, this past week, dad stated quite emphatically that he was going out to the women’s hockey game on friday evening at 7:30 p.m., come hell or high water. i was welcome to join him…or he’d even go alone! [it is quite unlike dad to get such a vehement bee in his bonnet! kinda funny!].

i was in! i love hockey! ohl, nhl, olympic, small children scrambling after a puck…sounds good to me. but i’ve always just seen guys play, never women. [tangent: i was born out-of-era. when i was growing up, they did not have girls’ hockey teams. ringette was the only option for us females. i would have been begging to play if the opportunity had been there – as evidence, i present my fiesty stick-wielding skillz and slapshot pow-ah in grade school floor hockey!].

so, friday night found dad AND me at the rec centre (< 10 min walk away!), ready to cheer on the wlu golden hawks vs the windsor lancers.

brrr…even though it was a mild night out, hockey is sure not as warming as baseball!

when we got in, there was a chuck-a-puck display:

pick your puck!

$3 for a puck which you will attempt to get as close to centre ice as possible, during the second intermission. dad wanted to “help out the girls,” so we chose a puck – lucky #30 in honour of our old house number.

in our seats!

the game is on!...

...and just ELEVEN seconds in, windsor scored! rats!

laurier tied it up with less than a minute to play in the first period!

the girls play a good game. their strengths lie in stickhandling and skating. there’s no bodychecking or fighting allowed, so the emphasis is on skills and playmaking. the game went super fast!

second period intermission! time for chuck-a-puck! i made dad chuck…

unfortunately, our puck ended up nowhere near centre ice!

…and a picture  for my continuing series

sir, could i get you to take photo for my blog?!

the girls on both teams seemed to tire in the third period. there also seemed to be a lot of snarking and trash-talking going on! laurier prevailed and won 4-2. good game! laurier sure had more chances (shots on goal ended up being 30-15 in laurier’s favour), and the windsor goalie was pretty sharp. i liked the fast pace – two hours, start to finish, including the two fifteen minute intermissions.

glad our home team won!

the great thing about a sports event, as compared to a movie, is that you can talk through the whole thing – which dad and i did!

what a fun evening out! now we’ll have to check out a men’s uni match for comparison!

did you ever play team sports, as a youngster? i played two years of softball in grades 6 and 7. let’s just say it…wasn’t my thing!

I’ve never been a player of sports. It’s kind of sad when I think about it…because I’d love to be able to play! But I’m too easily intimidated. And I don’t like getting hurt. I joke around with my friend that we should start a league (of anything really – hockey, or soccer, or volleyball) that you’re allowed to join if you can only catch a ball half of the time. Sounds like you had a great night with your dad…and it wasn’t Starbucks! 😉

oh, i am with you on your list of intimidating factors. body contact and slamming balls (!) into other people (ie volleyball) are not my thing, either! yes! we made it out of s’bux! although there was coffee available at the rink!!

    What is “ringette”?

Sounds like a fun time with Dad….and I’m so with you on the being able to talk through the whole thing! I once was asked on a first date by someone who wanted to go to a movie–and I thought that was so strange! How would we get to know each other? I should have suggested a sporting event—but I just said no thanks 🙂

I played soccer in 3rd grade (co-ed, and I was scared), softball for a few years (till 6th grade), volleyball from 7th-12th (with a one year break in 11th), basketball in 7th-9th, and 11th. Then track in 9th (that’s kind of a team sport—I did a relay!), tennis in 11th, and gymnastics throughout (until I will 17). Gymnastics is technically a team sport, but it sure didn’t feel like it!

I wasn’t super athletic, but just liked to play games…and I lived in such a small town that it wasn’t all that competitive (meaning, I could always make the team even when I was awful—like tennis).

wow, i love the variety of sports you played, lisa! that’s the way to see where your interests lie. i love your date story…so you just said no, thanks. that is classic! and i agree – a movie is not the best option for a first date! ringette is similar to hockey but instead of a puck there is a round “donut” and instead of shooting the puck you have a stick with which you manoeuvre this donut. i think the sport was more popular in the 70s and 80s then it is now.

Oh…I so never played team sports aside from when I was forced to in gym! Never even occurred to me. I have been to college women’s hockey games though! In fact I’ve never been to any other kind. I’m always impressed with how fast things move.
So, I’m trying to figure out if your birthday is today or tomorrow (I’m thinking tomorrow…). It’s been cool to be around for an entire kiki project (and happy birthday…although I’ll probably say it again tomorrow)!

ok, that is neat that you’ve only been to women’s games!! the women play with a finesse that you don’t see in the men’s games. i was so impressed with their skating speed! yup, bday is tomorrow! although celebrations start today – it’s going to be a bithday WEEK! that is right – we have been blog friends for over a year now – wow!!

I did ballet from about age 4 until grade 4. In grade 5 I joined the running club and I have been running ever since. I did X-country from grades 9-12 but I was never a fan of (or very good at) track and field.
