butter of the almond variety, jar two

a couple weeks ago, i bought my first jar of almond butter in a very long time:

no photo-staging for me - open the fridge, point the camera, presto!

the jar is almost gone. since i love this brand of pb…

also stored in the fridge! not to be confused with my #1 go-to, kraft all-natural (that one i keep in the cupboard)

…i decided to try a maranatha almond butter:

raw, no salt...and an official supplier to canada's olympic teams!

let’s compare! (using the patented kiki **** four star rating system)…

price: (both almond butters are from valumart – did you know that valumart and food basics offer the same price points on peanut butter, and you cannot buy almond butter at food basics at all? now you do know!).

president’s choice blue menu crunchy almond butter = $7.49 for 460 g

maranatha raw almond butter = $7.99 for 340 g

frankly, this is more than i want to pay for any almond butter, so they both get ** (two stars) i do recognize that pres choice offers more bang for your buck.

taste:

pres choice: mild, pleasant…yet it gave me heartburn a couple of days (and i never get heartburn)! knock off a star for that. *** (three stars).

maranatha: mild, more pronounced taste of almonds than pres choice. **1/2 (two stars point five)

texture:

pres choice: wonderful!! the crunch factor is THE BEST, yet it still feels silky on the tongue – what a fabulous contrast. *** 1/2 stars (three point five stars).

maranatha: runny! you could never plop this almond butter on an apple – it’d run all over your fingers. would be great in a recipe or stirred into hot oatmeal. ** (two stars)

will i buy it again?

pres choice: yes. like i said, this almond butter grew on me, the emptier the jar became.

maranatha: maybe?? the jury is still out.

conclusion: i still like peanut butter better!

next up: i want to try bulk barn’s almond butter!

how much did you pay for the last jar of pb you bought, and what brand did you buy? i had totally stocked up at valumart the last time my favourite all-natural kraft was on sale ($3.49, i do believe)…

on the shelf: peanut butter sandwiched by coffees!

…but i had to break down last week and buy it at regular price at food basics where it was $6.99!! i remember reading in the newspaper a few months ago that pb prices were going to explode…and they have! what happened to the days of peanut butter being an economical food product?!

I love peanut & almond butter both so much! my recent favorite almond butter is MaraNatha because I ate some at Billy’s mom’s house, and it was so delicious…then I looked at the ingredients & realized it’s because of the sugar, palm oil, and salt. 😉

that is funny that you had the same brand (maranatha)! see, i love my kraft pb because it is ONLY peanuts – no salt, sugar. so to have almond butter because of the health value…is almond really better?! what a conundrum! i wish i had access to some of the brands that you can get in the U.S.!! i do know that you are an almond butter fan, too! cool! 🙂

I like trader joe’s almond butter, crunchy with flax seeds…so it’s extra crunchy! I think most non-peanut nut butters cost more…this one is about 5 bucks.

D’oh…didn’t realize the comment went through twice!

      • 1970kikiproject  On April 2, 2012 at 7:43 pm

no worries! better than no comment coming through, at all! another vote for trader joe’s!!…i am so jealous! next time i am in the states, i must find a tj’s!! nut butter with flaxseed -> YES!!! i found a brand in florida (naturally more, i think it was??) that was pb with flaxseed and it was fantastic. i am laughing at “pricey” being $5. this one brand of almond butter at my valumart is $11.99 for a regular sized jar!

I buy Trader Joe’s brand nut butters. I like their crunchy almond butter with flaxseeds….it’s extra crunchy! Almond (and other non-peanut) butters can be pricey…I think the almond butter is about 5 bucks at TJs

I bought the store brand creamy PB because I use it mostly in shakes. It was as good as the “better” brands and I would buy it again. $2.99

    • 1970kikiproject  On April 2, 2012 at 12:06 pm

wow! fabulous pb price, johanna!! maybe you better stock up in case the price explosion hits your area??! creamy would be better in a shake than crunchy – and it would add excellent flavour!

I looove Maranatha crunchy PB but haven’t tried the almond butter yet! I’m also a big fan of PB&Co – their cinnamon raisin swirl peanut butter is delish! As for almond butters… make sure you stop in at Healthy Foods & More – they have their own brand, as well as a bazillion others on the shelf. I’ve only heard all the brilliant things about Justin’s Almond Butter, but as far as I know, we can’t get it here! 😦 Maybe some day!

    • 1970kikiproject  On April 2, 2012 at 11:18 am

do you know, i JUST saw last week that sobey’s is carrying pb & co! i did not know that! i agree that their varieties are wonderful! thank for the tip on healthy foods and more brand – i will add that to my (growing) list! i know – are you not soooo envious of the brands available in the states? i would LOVE to try justin’s, among others!!

  • Gina Unger  On April 2, 2012 at 9:03 am

omg, so it’s really true that pb prices are exploding?!?! i went to buy some last week and it was double the price as usual so off i went to costco where the price was still the same. i bought 6 2kg jars at once but maybe should have bought more???! i am not happy about this price increase. 😦
thanks for the info on the almond butter – never tried yet.

    • 1970kikiproject  On April 2, 2012 at 9:06 am

ok, i am laughing, i kid you not, at the mental image of you carrying six x 2 kg jars – talk about your upper body work out for the day! man, do i need to get into costco!!! that is interesting that their prices were still the same…i have my fingers crossed that it is a good peanut growing season next time around (although i have no idea what time of year is good for peanut crops??!).

Our go-to is definitely Kraft smooth. We got about 8 jars a few months ago when they were $2.99!!!! We go through lots around here!!

    • 1970kikiproject  On April 2, 2012 at 9:01 am

$299??? zowie, that is fantastic! i can see why you got eight! and i agree – kraft makes excellent pb, even better than some of the chichi health food store varieties – kind of surprising!

  • Stephanie  On April 2, 2012 at 8:13 am

Butter of the almond. Ha! I love Maranatha almond butter because the taste is mild. But I’m definitely more of a peanut butter girl.

    • 1970kikiproject  On April 2, 2012 at 9:02 am

hey, this a-z project will bring out our creative sides, if nothing else, right?! maranatha crunchy pb – it is fantastic, and way more delicious than their almond butter. neat that you can get maranatha out your way too (i was not sure how widely available it is).

Makes me crazy how expensive the alternative nut butters can be. Even when you buy the store brands. Not too many of our local stores have a store brand of almond butter, so you just have to be lucky and find it on sale. I really like sunflower butter and that’s really hard to find except at Trader Joe’s which is just to far to go on a regular basis. 😦

    • 1970kikiproject  On April 2, 2012 at 9:04 am

i am trying to remember if i have tried sunflower butter??? i don’t think so – so thank you for the recommendation – maybe i’ll try that after this jar of almond butter! fran, we don’t even have trader joe’s up here, so i am envious that you have access!…even if it involves a bit of a drive!

  • Lisa  On April 2, 2012 at 6:34 am

Hmmmm….I am not an almond butter fan! But part of the reason is because I love pb so much (I tried not to eat it for a while because I read too much about aflatoxins…and then found my local Once Again brand that explained how they screen for that). I did a nut butter tasting at a corporate clients once (I should do that again!)…macadamia, almond, pb, sunbutter, dark chocolate almond, etc…

The general consensus was the macadamia was too runny (I thought it was gross—it was so runny I could pour it!), the almond butter was alright…..but the faves were sunbutter and dark chocolate almond.

I have no idea what I pay for pb…maybe I’ll look next time, but even if it’s $6.99 I’m still gonna buy it! Whenever we meet (I still think we should shoot for May or July this year!)…I’ll bring you a jar of my fave, Once Again American Classic….it makes me happy!

    • 1970kikiproject  On April 2, 2012 at 6:46 am

oh, i would love to try that pb!! and yes, we should shoot for a summer meet-up – it didn’t happen last year! a nut butter tasting event – that would be fun!! i either forgot or did not know that you are not an almond butter fan – interesting! i em envious of all the brands you have in the U.S. that we cannot get here…in florida, i found a couple that were divine! and yes, no matter the price, pb is going to be on our grocery lists, right?!
