look down, way down

30 day photography challenge

day #5: from a high angle

this is me being artsy!

love the rectangular symmetry!

i snapped this photo in the stairwell of my building – i just had to go around the corner from my unit. i am on the fourth floor, but because it is a loft-style dwelling, it is like we are on the seventh floor. that is seventy-eight steps or ten flights of stairs to go up or down!

i knew right from when i first read over the list of photography challenge challenges that this shot is the photo i wanted to include for “from a high angle.” in an ideal world, i would have traveled to the ROM – there is a gorgeously grand staircase there with a totem pole in the middle open space:

have you ever been up the CN tower? confession time: i like to count stairs! can you imagine what fun it would be if i ever did the CN tower climb (or this CN tower climb)? i have been up the CN tower once – by elevator! – less than ten years ago. the view of toronto and lake ontario was incredible!

stairs or elevator? me = stairs, whenever possible because i dislike waiting. although, when i arrive home, if i am burdened with groceries, i take the elevator, bien sรปr. i have timed it: whether you ascend or descend the steps, the elevator takes basically the same amount of time!

in unrelated news, i placed a library hold request on “50 shades of grey” last eve. i am number #117 on the list! actually, i thought it would be worse, given the current hype. too curious to not jump on the bandwagon!

read it? going to? not of general interest? i ditched girl with the dragon tattoo in under 200 pages, and thought the da vinci code was way over-rated. gotta give 50 shades a try!

That is too funny about our “similar books” post!
I haven’t been to the CN tower on my visits to Toronto…generally I prefer the stairs for all the reasons you mentioned…although more than 5-6 floors and I’ll take an elevator.

      oooh…forgot to say, great photo!

i really enjoyed your blog post this morning, zo! i thought it was funny how we mentioned a couple of the same books! a CN tower visit is worth the price of admission, at least one, imo. the view is amazing on a clear day!

I am currently reading the first book. Not sure what I think of it. It is not normally my type of book, but I didn’t want to be left out either! ๐Ÿ™‚ I hear they are going to make a movie out of the series, although hard to imagine just exactly what they will be able to show in the movie!

You are welcome to borrow it, but there are 2 other friends in line ahead of you! Better than #117 thought! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • The Orchard  On June 5, 2012 at 11:42 am

      Though, not thought!

neat coincidence that you are reading 50 shades right now, tricia! re: your movie comment, now i am really curious to start reading! please keep me in mind for your copy – i will gladly take the first copy i can get my hands on!

  • Lisa  On June 5, 2012 at 11:19 am

Love the artsy shot! Looks like it might be a little dizzy-inducing to take that one!

I haven’t read 50 Shades…still on the fence. And really, I haven’t been reading anything for fun lately….I have two books waiting for me in the hopper!

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 5, 2012 at 12:05 pm

lisa, as i was taking the photo, i was scared i would drop my camera as it was a bit scary leaning over the edge like that, and looking wayyy down! maybe 50 shades would be a good marco island beach read?!!

  • Stacie  On June 5, 2012 at 10:50 am

Nice photo! Re 50 Shades, I will probably read it when I can finally get a copy. It’s not really my thing–I never read any type of romance novels. And, I certainly felt in the beginning that I did not need to jump on the mommy porn bandwagon. But now I feel like I have to know what everyone is talking about.

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 5, 2012 at 10:57 am

ok, let me know if/when you read 50 shades and we can compare notes, stacie! i just don’t want to feel out of the loop, either! (although i have not read hunger games, for example…and feel no need to explore those books!).

I have a photo of a spiral staircase looking up which I took back in the 60’s. I thought it was an interesting shot. I am an elevator user. That’s a recent change for me. Two years ago I broke my ankle and had surgery on it. The plates and pins keep me from bending it properly which makes going up/down stairs uncomfortable. I’m sure I could get used to the feeling if I just tried but I haven’t made the effort. I probably won’t read Shades of Grey even though it is only soft porn. I did like the DaVinci Code though.

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 5, 2012 at 9:47 am

i can totally see how the elevator is a much more practical option for you, johanna. i am just glad you can do your walking! i am going into “50 shades of grey” with an open mind…i don’t really know what to expect!

Cathy, if you decide you don’t want to wait in line for the library copy of Fifty Shades, let me know. I’m currently on book 3 and would be willing to lend you my copies. Great excuse to have to have coffee again.

  • Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count  On June 5, 2012 at 6:45 am

Very cool photo, Cathy! Love the totem pole one too, though. When we were kids we walked to the top of the Washington Monument, in D.C. I was ready to die when I got to the top and I was only about 8 or 9 at the time. I wish I had stairs like your condo. I’d be in better shape because I’m not a fan of elevators and I would be doing the stairs all the time. 50 Shades of Grey…I don’t think I’m going to try it. Not that I’m a prude, I’m not sure why. I’m kind of tired of bad language in books and I’m thinking this will be full of it. When it gets to you (117-that will be next year some time ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) You can let me know if I should try it!!

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 5, 2012 at 6:50 am

fran, i should have added that the library has 14 copies of “50 shades…” – i am hoping i can read it this summer??! for sure, i will let you know my thoughts/give a review! the washington monument would be cool to visit!

I absolutely love the stairwell in your building. I’m a symetrical kind of person , too! I have been up the CN Tower but I went by elevator. My son in law kept my attention so that I wouldn’t see that the elvator was on the outside of the building. (I’m terrified of heights). I blissfully went up, crammed against the door, not the outside window, got to the top and actually walked on the glass floor! What an awesome building. I am loving your photos!

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 5, 2012 at 6:52 am

you and my mom, ele! she is not a fan of heights, either and needs to be distracted/hidden from looking out whenever heights are involved. glad you walked on the glass floor! that freaked me out more than the elevator, actually!
