30 day photography challenge

day #10: childhood memory

i chose today’s photo because the story was fresh in my mind – just last week, i recounted the tale to little e!

as a family of four with a stay-at-home mom (ie no big holiday budget), back in the 70’s, our summer vacations included day trips to popular spots within an hour or two of our home: niagara falls, ontario place, storybook gardens, the beach…i have fond and clear memories of our happy outings to these fun-but-not-that-expensive tourist attractions.

when i was five and the brother was two, we went to the toronto zoo. the TO zoo is impressive: it covers a lot of ground, and they have a ton of different zones with animals from around the world. as you can imagine, a zoo trip required a lot of walking. five year old legs can get tired! so, over by the giraffes, my parents had a brilliant idea:

we’ll let little cathy ride in the stroller, and the toddler can walk!

it was the perfect solution! i got a rest and the brother got to expend some energy. in terms of photography, i love this photo because of the pleased-as-punch expression on my face, and also that the giraffe is in the background [i remember that the brother and i loved the african animal zone the very best – lions and tigers, giraffes, oh my!].

another fun memory about that day: we had lunch at mcdonalds! this was a special treat because again, on a limited budget, restaurant meals were special, not the norm. and we did not consume fast food on a regular basis, either. during this era, the toronto zoo ONLY had mcdonalds food offerings! i recall seeing strategically-placed mcdonalds restos all throughout the zoo.

here are two more “unofficial” photo entries for today:

#1: i like this picture because it is artfully set up! note the greenery bracketing our family (dad would have used the automatic timer on his camera):

everyone is smiling AND looking at the camera! win!

#2: basically, i want to highlight my cute top!

still by the giraffes – so, before i got in the stroller!

that ensemble would have been sewn by grandma!

which zoos have you visited? waterloo park has a very small zoo-ish area! in it, you will find rabbits, llamas, a peacock or two…it’s not very complex, yet it’s a big hit with children!

update: my canon point n shoot is working beautifully, again! [knock on wood, and all fingers crossed]. i have no explanation for this. i guess it likes this photo project?!

I have been to the TO Zoo and the San Diego Zoo. I have been to African Lion Safari and the Okanagan Game farm. Oh yeah, and the Waterloo “zoo”, too! 🙂 I think I was at one in Chilliwack, BC as well, but can’t remember the name!

that’s a great mix of zoo visits, tricia! i am sure you are VERY familiar with our little waterloo park area, given that you have three children!

OMG! could you have been any cuter?!?! Fran and I were lucky enough to have a stay-at-home mom, too…and a Grandmother. We say this all the time but it’s so true, we had a charmed childhood and had no idea what the real world was like. Sometimes, I wish we could go back there again…

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 10, 2012 at 11:36 am

haha, thanks, ele! we did grow up in what seems a “simpler” era, didn’t we – not quite so gogogo like today. that is wonderful that you had your g’ma with you, too. i bet you enjoyed many good moments!

What cute photos! You do look so pleased with yourself!
Let’s see, I’ve been to the Philadelphia zoo a number of times. The Prague Zoo…a zoo in Berlin (do not remember the name). I must have been in some others..oh Popcorn Park Zoo..that’s in south jersey and features rescued/injured animals…

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 10, 2012 at 11:16 am

wow!! you’ve got an impressive resume of zoo visits, zo! very cool! your comment re the popcorn park zoo reminds me of a donkey sanctuary that is located not too far from here – again, a shelter, this time for rescued donkeys!

I have pictures like this from the “Vancouver Game Farm”. I even have one with me on an elephant! Your pictures remind me of them….I will have to ask m&d for scans.
    Thanks for the memories!

an elephant ride!! kim, that is so very cool! what a great memory. yes – do start scanning photos – i think i need to start doing that, too! (my parents have a scanner!).

I love seeing the old photos! Trips to the SF Zoo were one of our favorites. Later, I took my kids there and also to the San Diego Zoo. And, like you, we grew up on a tight budget and McDs was a very special treat (and Sizzler was like winning the lottery!). How nice you live so close to Niagra Falls. It’s on my list of road trips but a bit far from NJ/NYC area so I need a long weekend. I have heard the Canadian side is the best! Happy Sunday Cath!

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 10, 2012 at 8:20 am

thanks, stacie! yes – you must see niagara falls from the canadian side! (although i would like to go to the US side so i could hit up some outlet malls, haha!). oh, that is fun that your family did zoo trips, too. good memories, aren’t they!

  • Dawn  On June 10, 2012 at 7:44 am

Very cute pics! Are you taking pics of the pics and posting them? That’s such a great idea, I must do that to preserve some memories too. Where about is Waterloo Park with the animals? My daughter would love that as an outing.

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 10, 2012 at 7:50 am

yes, i don’t have a scanner, dawn, so i just take a photo of the photo! it’s hard to NOT get a glare! but yes, better than nothing! the waterloo park animals are just along the gravel path – if you go in to the parking lot off of seagram drive, you will see the area! there’s also playground equipment – your daughter would love it!

  • Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count  On June 10, 2012 at 7:37 am

Your camera likes getting a work out, Cathy! Love the old photos…your folks haven’t changed that much! You’re right about the pleased as punch look on your face…Too Cute. I’ve been to the Phila. Zoo, San Diego Zoo and the National Zoo in D.C. I think in grade school I also went to the Bridgeton Zoo, a tiny one in a local town. There are photos somewhere…Have a great Sunday, Cathy!

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 10, 2012 at 7:49 am

thanks, fran! wow – you’ve visited some of the major zoos (at least i recognize san diego and philadelphia). maybe you will find one in nm?!!
