as random as you can get

30 day photo challenge

day #13: yourself with 13 things

obviously, whoever came up with this photo challenge is not superstitious! asking us to find 12 or 15 things would be more comfortable karma, don’t you think? however, i do like how “13 things” matches up with today’s calendar date (the 13th day of the month/june!).

this is another assignment for which i debated and cast aside a few ideas. should i pick thirteen running-related items? thirteen different knitting needles? thirteen books from my personal library? nah, those are all topics we’ve covered before…i wanted something !!unique!! and !!RANDOM!! random, random, what would be the most random things to show…

(source)

i didn’t even need to leave the kitchen to complete this task!

meet my junk drawer:

an un-retouched photo! i opened the drawer, snapped the pic

you cannot get more random than the spot where you toss everything that you don’t know what to do with!

i rifled through the assortment of *treasures* and had to laugh because i found some stuff that i had forgotten about, and other items that i have no clue as to why i kept them!

in terms of designing the photo, my initial idea was to place my head in the centre of the snapshot, with the 13 items all around, then do a self-portrait. but, i wasn’t jazzed about all the planning involved (i envisioned cutting out a cardboard copy of my head, placing it on the floor so i would know how much space i would need, setting out the objects, removing the fake head, inserting my real head, figuring out at what arm’s length the camera needed to be held…blech, too much co-ordination!).

still, taking this picture was a lot tougher than anticipated!

effort #1:

(any excuse to include compression socks, haha!) room for improvement in the display…

i felt like i was in a pilates class, that’s how much i had to tilt back and stabilize my middle in order to get everything into the frame!

effort #2:

a slight rearrangement – that’s better!

effort #3:

this is my favourite one! but i got my black-nail-polished L thumb down there – oops!

here, then, is our official photo of the day:

“myself + 13 things”

for the explanation, we’ll go around in a circle, starting at my right foot and moving clockwise, then down the centre:

#1: red dice that says “caesar’s windsor” on it. when was i in a casino in windsor??!

#2: box of extra keys – i put this together after a key-loss scare a few years ago!

#3: old cell phone + case – why did i keep this??

#4: box of matches – love the cute design on the box!

#5: pretty pen – but it needs an ink cartridge refill!

#6: instructions for how to make green bin liners out of newspaper – i do need/use that!

#7: busted ipod shuffle – why did i keep this?

#8: my collection of business cards/contact information – should be weeded out

#9: sample size face cream with SPF – forgot about this!

#10: tennis ball – to roll/sit on if i feel a tight spot in my glutes

#11: pretty kleenex from mom, xmas stocking giftie – too cute to use!

#12: a hair clip – should be upstairs with the others

#13: gina‘s oldest son’s birth announcement – um, little h is now SIX!

you’d think this photo-taking venture would have inspired me to take twelve minutes and clean out the drawer while it was open – nope! after the photoshoot, i simply dumped all thirteen items right back in!

~*~*~*~*

i know we’ve talked junk storage before, but oh well…

where’s your “junk drawer,” and what are three items in it, currently? even neat freaks need a junk drawer! what you can’t see doesn’t exist -> that’s my theory!

have you ever watched the tv show hoarders? me=no. but i am interested in the psychology behind hoarding!

Love the race brochure in the drawer. My junk drawer has a few of those! Will we see you Sunday?

The show Hoarders is really sad. Most of the people on it have had terrible things happen to them that makes them not want to part with things.

oh, thanks for giving me the FYI on hoarders…now i am not so interested to watch it. :/ we WILL meet up on sunday – will be great to see you again! i do not know why i kept that race registration as i entered online?!! i really SHOULD go home and toss it!

Love these photos. I actually thought “ha! wearing compression socks!” and then you called yourself out for it! [And I love the thumb after my “hey that’s my foot in this photo” episode from last week]. Our junk drawer is in the kitchen, it has phone chargers, gum, and take-out menus!

thanks, zo! yes – again we see a similar theme on our blogs! i could not accept that thumb-showing photo as the day’s official photo since i am supposed to be working on my *skillz* during this challenge! that’s a solidly random assortment of three items in your junk drawer!

so funny! i saw hayes’ birth announcement right away! i remember spending all kinds of time putting those together while i waited for him to be born – late. 🙂
we have a junk drawer – who doesn’t? – and the kids go thru it regularly so it’s not very full most days… they love to use the items in it for crafts – quite creative actually!
however, we also have a clutter counter which drives me crazy! jeff and i both go thru it regularly, but never seems often enough. it’s the counter with things/dates/events that need not be forgotten (mostly paper) so you can’t file them away right after getting them. there needs to be a better solution for such items!

ooo, thank you for popping in to comment, gina! h’s birth announcement is just about the cutest i have ever seen – you can see the time you put into creating it! thanks for bringing up the junk counter area, too! yup – i can relate! i tend to let paper etc accumulate by my agenda book…i see similarity in our “filing systems!”

First thing I had to decide was which drawer I consider my junk drawer. There are several which could be so labeled. I’ll call the top drawer in my bedside table the one we’re talking about. In it – safety pins, a lighter (for candles cuz I don’t smoke), and a stack of business cards which need to be sorted.

PS – if you read Healthy Tipping Point. Caitlin just put up the first post about the birth of her baby. Check out the cuteness.

i will go check caitlin’s blog right now, johanna, thanks! excited to see if it’s boy or girl! my dad said his top bedside table drawer is one of his junk drawers, too. glad i am not the only one who keeps business cards in a drawer!

At least you did your ab work in the process! We have so many junk drawers it’s embarrassing. My husband thinks every drawer is a junk drawer….I don’t know where to start!

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 13, 2012 at 11:17 am

ok, your comment made me laugh, too, stacie! “every drawer is a junk drawer” -> too funny! at least you can close drawers…not like he thinks every room corner is a drop zone or something!

  • brokencookiesdontcount  On June 13, 2012 at 7:05 am

My house is my junk drawer!! But I’m working on it. I fear that if someone came in they’d think we were hoarders…actually we’re just disorganized packers!! Will this never end?! I’m inclined to pitch the whole lot out on trash day! Great post, Cathy!! Love the arrangement of things!

    • 1970kikiproject  On June 13, 2012 at 8:59 am

fran, your comment does make me laugh!! good luck with your packing and organizing and tossing…i know this is quite the task as you look ahead to new mexico!…but think of it as a great opportunity?!! wish i could come to help you – seriously. i love organizing!!
