the alternate title for today’s blog entry could have been “the best laid plans…

back in the winter, a bunch of emails were exchanged as we made plans for a family reunion/running of the waterloo classic. we’ve done this thrice before (you can read the account from two years ago here! the other two times were before i started blogging).

well, as it turns out, due to either injury or busy travel schedules, the only one participating in the race today is…me!

at race kit pick-up yesterday: me, myself and i!

let’s hope the fizzle turns into sizzle!

the classic holds a special spot in my because it was my very first road race – twenty-two years ago, this father’s day weekend. i wrote about my favourite running photo, taken at that run, here!

yesterday late aft, i finalized my race day preparations:

racing nails and kick-a$$ songs on the beast. i am ready to go.

as i type this post (again, late yesterday aft) the weather forecast is up in the air. as such, i have two possible outfits ready.

ensemble #1: in case of sun and heat (pretty, pretty please!)

back in black!

this is the outfit i reaaalllllly want to wear because the tshirt makes me laugh: i DIDN’T train for the ottawa 2012 race weekend (the shirt was a freebie i received at the store)…and had no intentions of so doing!

ensemble #2: in case of rain and cool temps (nooooo!)

still featuring black

the swaps: longsleeve nike shirt for the t; beanie ball cap, not the headband; asics gel noosa shoes instead of brooks ghosts. keepin’ the cw-x compression socks and lululemon shorts in either scenario!

[eta: i now have it on very reliable and good authority that the sunday morning weather is going to be humid but not rainy – YES!].

the race recap is planned for tomorrow. hint: wearing all black gives you the clue as to my attitude going into this race. hammer time.

30 day photography challenge:

day #17: technology

man oh man, thank goodness i am able to talk about running-related technology. if i had to explore the topics of computers, cameras, ipods, blackberries, or the internet, i would get the willies and for sure be convinced that a jinx was about to fall on my head. [i have no techie issues going on right now, can you believe it?!].

today’s race is being chip-timed – that is nothing out of the ordinary these days – most races do make use of the technology available that gives participants an accurate reading of their race time.

but things sure have changed since i started racing back in 1990! in those days, someone would record your bib number on a clipboarded sheet of paper as you crossed the finish line. the first year i ran boston, (1997) there was chiptiming, but there was quite the delay between the end of the race and when you could get your results. nowadays, there are still people out on the course, and the top finishers’ times are already available!

today’s official photo:

the “chip” is now attached right to the back of your bib!

[thought i’d throw a little GU in as a colourful backdrop, there…].

at the end of today’s race, there’ll be no need to return a chip that was tied to your shoelace or velcro’d around your ankle – that was the chip timing method used up until bib-chips.

what will be the next evolution? a bionic implant?!

and….wishing a happy father’s day to all the dads out there – enjoy your celebrations!
