blogging: change is in the air

my all-time favourite childhood movie was mary poppins. i always cried when she sang “feed the birds,” and again at the end, when she left the children. i wanted her to stay and be the nanny forever! but, mary poppins just knew it was time to leave when she sensed a change in the air.

it’s time for me to make a blogging schedule change!

this is not going to be some melodramatic, sob-story post…no worries there! but, i do want to just have on record that i’m returning to my blogging roots. when i started the 1970kikiproject blog in january 2010, i only blogged when i had something to say about one of my projects.

in that same vein, i am going to switch up to blogging:

  • when i have a new experience to share with you
  • special occasions/holidays/celebrations
  • when i just can’t keep my mouth shut and am super-excited about something

like i said, this is really nbd – except for the fact that i am breaking my blogging streak of posting an entry every day in 2011 (and that is one of my eleven for ’11 goals, too). yes, that irks me. i’m a perfectionist, i like to stick by my word, i like to complete goals. [hey! now that i know i won’t achieve all eleven goals, i don’t have to start cooking! that was an “eleven for ’11” goal that had yet to get off the ground!]

however, blogging is a hobby, and a creative outlet. and when i pressure myself (i fully realize these are self-imposed expectations) to come up with ideas, *make* blogging time happen when i’d rather be doing something else…well, something’s gotta give. i ♥ blogging and want to keep that enthusiasm intact!

it’s funny that we make new year’s resolutions anyway…a lot can happen in twelve little months! for sure, i am not the same person as i was back on january 1st – so as i evolve, it’s ok to have plans be malleable, too. [wow, that yoga stuff is rubbing off on my psyche, eh?!]

as mentioned earlier this week, i am having so much fun at work and am pouring more energy into those hours of the day. that is just perfect for this moment in time!

now, the funny thing is that i have a few new experiences on the horizon…so near-daily blog posts may continue in the coming week!

we’ll chat soon, friends!

Oh, I think you are smart! It’s important to assess how we spend our time, where we put our energy each day, and what truly fulfills us! I think this is a great decision. I know when I started working at lululemon last March, I put pressure on myself to continue my same blogging schedule, but it got to be too much. And now I post 3-5 times a week based on what works for me and if I have anything to say. 🙂 xoxo

i knew you would get it, dorry! that’s just it…i love blogging when i have an idea at the ready. you were one of the examples i thought of for people who have evolved in their blogging style! i hope you had a wonderful birthday yesterday!!

Mary Poppins has a very special place in my heart too. Lately, I’ve gotten matthew to watch some older movies (b/c joe and I want to watch them too) like Pete’s Dragon and Swiss Family Robison…I think Mary Poppins should be next!! Thanks for the idea 🙂
I think it’s awesome that you are going with the flow of what fits for you with blogging—being able to flex and change with changing times and needs is a great strength! Goals are guides….but they don’t know what’s best for you! And yay for the change letting you off the hook of meeting another goal you’re not really crazy about 🙂
I’ve just returned from our potential future locale where we can be neighbors in Florida—Ft Myers beach was nice…but I still think I’ll fit in better with the oldies in Naples!

oh, yes – do watch mary poppins with matthew. wish i could join you all! and welcome back from the south! i preferred naples to ft myers, too. although i had a nice walk along a marina-area in fort myers! thanks for your goal comments – you’re a “flexible blogger” so you know that it’s more fun to blog when you feel like it than under pressure!

Will miss reading your posts everyday but if blogging is becoming a source of stress then it is high time for a change. Glad you’re taking care of yourself and enjoying the job so much. Wish I could make a trip up there to buy shoes. The last pair I bought have barely lasted 3 mos. That’s what happens when you go CHEAP.

    • 1970kikiproject  On October 3, 2011 at 10:13 am

thanks, johanna – and no worries, i’ll still be blogging regularly! three months – ouch. that IS a short life span! you should be able to get 6-12 months out of your shoes, depending on how much you use them!

  • Jess  On October 2, 2011 at 7:50 pm

I think that is completely understandable. I have found that blogging is much more fun when we do it when we want to. Everyday is hard!

    • 1970kikiproject  On October 2, 2011 at 8:03 pm

thanks, jess! i know you blog frequently but not every day…and blogging is easier when you have something exciting to report (like your vacation this summer!).

  • Julie  On October 2, 2011 at 3:17 pm

Cathy — honestly, reading your blog is one of the highlights of my day!! Even though I rarely comment, I ALWAYS read your daily blurbs and am always hit by how similar we are (except for knitting and baking :))))))…okay, I skim those ones). I love hearing what is going on with your life through your blog. So, yes, I do support blogging when it feels right, but also wanted to let you know that you have your “fans” who are touched by your thoughts every day.

    • 1970kikiproject  On October 2, 2011 at 4:31 pm

julie, thanks so much for your very kind words – you make my day! and no worries…i am not about to go crazy with cooking or baking blog entries…although the knitting is staying! 🙂 and yes, we ARE so alike! even down to our almost-the-same birthdays. thanks again for your comment!

I’ve always been amazed at your posting every day and can totally understand how/why you’ve decided to do this (2-3 times a week can feel chore-like). I’m relieved that you’ll continue posting, though. I think you hit the nail on the head about blogging as a hobby…if you don’t enjoy it, what’s the point. I’d much rather you post less and enjoy doing so then burn yourself out on the once a day posting.

    • 1970kikiproject  On October 2, 2011 at 12:33 pm

Thanks for your comments, zo. It’s a two part dilemma: thinking of what I would like to talk about and doing the actual blogging. It was all ok when I had an hour a day of “blogging time” (you know how the default time always seems to be an hour!) – I def want to keep blogging but without a schedule. I like your method of 2-3 times per week, not always the same days, either!

      • Zo  On October 2, 2011 at 12:40 pm

I actually mean to post on the same days, but sometimes I just don’t want to do the work or time gets away from me…so my only schedule has become 2-3 times a week. Except when I’m busy…or away…or don’t feel like it, or…:D

      • 1970kikiproject  On October 2, 2011 at 12:57 pm

perfect! that is the flexibility i am “striving” for! 🙂

  • Gina Unger  On October 2, 2011 at 8:27 am

way to go, cath! i fully support you in ‘breaking your word’ and not sticking to your goals at this point in time… you are right on the money when you say that we should allow ourselves to change our routines, etc. when we recognize that we are changing as people. this shouldn’t be seen as failure but as wonderful and necessary growth!

    • 1970kikiproject  On October 2, 2011 at 8:40 am

thank you for your uplifting and positive words, gina! (hug!) i so appreciate your support!
